Your New Best Friend...

Getting a new Yorkie puppy is a big decision. Did you know that Yorkies change coat colars as they age? Do you know what the registered colors of the breed are? Just how big will your pup grow to be? What characteristics will your puppy have? Is potty training already instilled in your new pup?  Do you have very small children in your home or other animals in the home? These are just some of the questions you should be thinking about when shopping for a new member of the family.

Yorkshire Terriers have a large price range, depending on location, lineage, and size of litter. Most breeders will charge an average of what pups are going for in their area. Is  a lower price Yorkie a deal? In this case, definitely not! A yorkie's parents give the new pups more than just milk, love and parenting. They also give them their DNA. Which means, your new pup could come with a whole mess of medical problems that show up down the road. Saving a few dollars today can definitely cost you major dollars in vet bills later. Yorkshire Terriers are not for the wholehold on a limited budget. It has been our experience that with Yorkies, you get what you pay for. Do not ever buy the cheapest pup, you will more than make up for it in vet bills very early on. We hear stories all the time of getting a great puppy that winds up costing way too much and breaking hearts when they have to be put down for health reasons. Yorkies tend to have more fragile systems than other dogs and medical insurance should be seriously considered when purchased a new puppy.

You should check with the breeder to see if they have taken steps to check the DNA of their sire and dame. They should also have a long history of litters to know if any illness have occurred in past litters. Please Do Not ever buy from a puppy store. While this make work out okay for other breeds,  yorkies sold in puppy stores most often come from puppy mills. Meaning, you have no idea of the medical background or quality of it's parents. (Even when the store employees state, or post signs, saying they don't use puppy mills. Reputable breeders never lack for buyers and are always happy to put you on their waiting list for the next litter, never needing to sell through pet stores!) We have heard too many heartbreaking stores regarding this. Buyer beware. Yorkies can live up to 20 years, most often living 16-18. You want the healthiest puppy you can afford, so you both have a long, happy life.

It is imperative that a female/dame mate with a male/sire smaller in order to deliver healthy pups. This ensures a normal delivery and the pups growing to be healthy in size and structure.

Although yorkie pups all start out black and tan (and looking like minature Rottweilers: very dark and shiny all over!), they will soon grow out their coats and closely resemble their parents.  Yorkie's are rare in that their coats continue to change in color, up to three years. Often coming back from the groomers looking like a new dog. So, you better be checking out both parents if you want to know what color your baby will grow up to resemble. Generally, the coat starts out black, turns grey or silver as it grows and then is it's true color. (Often, 6-12 month old pups look like punk rockers with their tri-color coats.)   Black & Tan: is exactly like it sounds. The coat is black all over, very straight with tan in the face, chest and feet. Blue & Gold: is much lighter version. Light blue grey body with light golden face, chest and feet. It is not uncommon for pups to have mixed parents (one of each color family), in which case, some pups will be black and tan, some blue and gold. Ask the breeder which they think will be which if it matters to you. Being an experienced breeder means you have the knowledge to inform the buyers of what they can expect to see in their new pup.

The characteristics of your new pup depend greatly on what the parents of the litter are like. Are all yorkies yappy and hyper? Of course not. But they have gotten a bad rap because of poor quality litters. The parents should bark when they fear an intruder to your home or feel threatened. They should not ever be allowed to bark all day (this is a sure sign of distress). If they come from barkers, they will learn that it's okay to bark all the time, yuk! Who wants that? Alternately, if the parents are calm and well behaved, so will be the pups. A happy yorkie will be given bones and toys to occupy him when you need to leave him and have a safe kennel enviroment to enjoy in your absence. Your breeder will already be providing this to the new litter (hopefully). This will help ensure you have a quiet, calm, well adjusted member of the family.

Ask your breeder questions (where they are local or not, all breeders should understand your concerns and have no problems answering any and all questions before and after a purchase. We give a lifetime of support to our buyers). Everything from what to have on hand to bring a new pup home, to training, potty behavior, good and bad habits and more. We equally love all the photos and updates we continue to receive from every litter we've produced. Happy buyers make lifelong friends.

Check out our "Puppy size chart" page to see what to expect as your new puppy grows. This can be a very helpful tool in determining which pup in the litter to pick as your own. Do you want a tiny one to carry everywhere you go, or one that will be a little tougher and bigger to go for longer walks? Do you want a male or female.

Females often cost more. Mostly because fewer are born in each litter and they tend to run smaller in size. That does not in any way mean that the males are less valuable. We often have people insist they only want a female, only to fall head of heals for a male instead and take him home without any reservations! Think about who is in the family, what you expect from your new friend, and are they any other pet members they need to adjust to. If you already have other dogs, especially if they are larger than Yorkies, we strongly urge you to consider a larger male pup. They will be tougher and handle those rough play sesssions when you're not around to referree.

I hope this information helps you in your search for a new best friend. We have raised many breeds over the years, but once you get a yorkie, you never go back. They are the smartest and most loyal pet you will ever consider a member of the family.
